I wake up dreaming of this toast. In August, it’s the dreaaammmm.

How to make toast in the air fryer

It is so easy to make toast in the air fryer, and it is one of my new favorite things.

All you need to do is butter or oil each side of your bread, place it flat down in your air fryer tray and “fry” for 3 minutes on one side, then flip and “fry” for 2 minutes on the other. I like to do this at 375F, but it really depends on your air fryer!

An air fryer serves as a tiny convection oven, so really this is just like making crostinis in you oven, only you don’t have to fire up the whole thing and get your kitchen all hot. This is a lower mess, lower effort way of doing things 😉

Ingredients you will need for this vegan heirloom tomato toast

You can use whatever ingredients you have, but I always lean towards the plant-based kind on this one because I can truly never tell the difference!

  • 2 slices sourdough bread, but make sure they can lay flat in your air fryer, if you are using that method!
  • 1 tbsp butter or plant-based butter of choice, I love Miyokos Creamery for this
  • 1 medium heirloom tomato
  • 1 sprig fresh basil
  • 2 tbsp cream cheese or plant-based cream cheese of choice
  • Flakey salt and fresh ground pepper – extra emphasis on the “flakey”!

How to prepare and serve this heirloom tomato toast

To get this toast from craving to table, it’s super easy. Here are the granular steps for anyone who wants them!

  • Coat one side of your bread with a thin layer of butter. Set your air fryer to 375F.
  • Place the bread laying flat in the air fryer drawer and “fry” for 3 minutes, then flip and “fry” for another 2 minutes at 375F. Go longer if you prefer a crisper slice of bread.
  • While the bread is frying, slice the heirloom tomatoes into thin, large pieces, and chiffonade the basil. You can also leave the basil whole if you prefer, just rub it in your hands to bring out the aroma.
  • When the toast is done, lightly coat each piece with cream cheese, then top with the tomatoes, basil, and salt and pepper to taste.
  • Serve immediately 🙂

FAQS

Can I use any kind of tomato for this?

It’s tomato season, so go wild! I will say there is nothing like a fresh heirloom, but if you only have access to other tomato varieties, they should work just as well to get your tomato fix.

What can I sub for the cream cheese?

I love subbing avocado or ricotta, a thin layer of either will add richness and creaminess to help offset the juicy acidity of the tomato.

Shaved Brussels Sprouts with Pomegranate Dressing Shaved Brussels Sprouts with Pomegranate Dressing and Chili Almonds! I usually don’t do baked salads back to back, but this dressing hit me like a ton of bricks and I needed to make it. It’s just the right amount of creamy, sweet and acidic, and the chili almonds balance everything out with a nutty crunch.

It serves four which means I have three servings in my fridge just WAITING for me, and I cannot wait.

Full recipe is on the blog and linked in bio, and I hope you’ll love it if you make it!

BONUS EPISODE - How to make a sourdough starter! B BONUS EPISODE - How to make a sourdough starter! Because the end of summer is for building your starter and the fall is for using it 😎

I call this my “Low Discard Sourdough Starter” because I’ve always found myself frustrated by how much flour recipes tell you to waste when building a starter. This one starts with as little flour as possible, and uses a method that makes sure you’ll be ready to bake in less than 7 days. It differs a bit from the traditional method, but it’s fool-proof, and never fails me.

This is a bit of a longer video, so feel free to save it as a resource for building your starter and visual cues! The full instructions are written out on the blog post linked below and in my bio.

Let me know of any questions in the comments, and I hope this helps!
